The Night I Slept with My Bees

Yes, I slept with my bees. Many years ago, I dreamt of building a bee temple with a pavilion roof, mostly for the reason of keeping my bees covered and protected from the abundant rain that we have here on the east side of Hawaiʻi Island. The bee temple structure has been built for over 4 years now, and I have never slept there, although it has always been in my mind’s eye.
I have had every excuse. Oh, it’s too cold, it’s too much to bring my blanket out there, what if my son wakes up and I am not in the house and he freaks out, what if a centipede bites me? Last night, the same mind chatter of excuses started to flood. I realized just then something profound. The excuses I am making are because I don’t want to go outside of my comfort zone, which is literally my bed. To leave my bed would require that I abandon my soft, comfortable nest of routine, safety, and normality. Sound familiar?
This concept of not going outside of our comfort zone is probably familiar to many others, and we share the waves of excuses that keep us comfortable, and life is predictable. Is it human nature? As I pondered this, I realized I absolutely had to get out of my comfort zone and sleep on the Earth as if my life depended on it. Complacency is the death of my growth and obstructs my creativity.
What happened that night was a bit beyond me. I experienced something that may not be translated even through writing or speaking….
The first thing I noticed was how comfortable it was to be on the Earth. Just on a mat with a blanket, I felt so held by the Great Mother Gaia. A deep relaxation came over me. Then I noticed the Bee Hum, a deep, profound hum. All 8 hives were humming to the same tone, with some variation of a high pitch from time to time. The hum was extremely nourishing and healing, so much so that it felt out of this world, and I knew it was working beyond the veil of my understanding.
It was a new moon night, and if you have been to Hawaiʻi, then you know we are known for our star sightings, hence why astronomy is a big deal here. In the rural county where I reside, there is little to no light pollution.
The star energy was the tipping point. I was held by Mama Earth, serenaded by the profound hum of the bees, and now receiving the cosmic rays of star energy. What!!!! I was beside myself.
I woke up a few times through the night and was happy that I was awake to experience the shooting stars, the Milky Way shift in the sky, and the great vastness of our existence that I have taken for GRANTED, and it made me feel so alive that I couldn’t help but be moved to deep gratitude. WTF, Jenny… are you really choosing comfort and routine over this magical way of life? As we all desire more ease, routine, or comfort, are we missing the whole point… we are living in a miracle of beauty. All I have to do is go outside and sleep with my bees to understand this.
This has taught me a lesson, a very valuable lesson… moving out of your comfort zone is not only needed, it is necessary if you want to invoke magic and feel the vastness of infinity.
If I choose comfort and security, in this simple act, I would have missed the shooting stars, I would have missed the light codes, I would have missed the bees humming codes into the night and into my body, and the feeling of truly being held by Mama Gaia, the Great Mother Goddess. What a profound lesson is found when I just sleep with my bees.

Xoxo, Jenny
